What is SEO
SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of improving a website so that search engines like Google can find, understand and trust its pages, and show them for the searches that matter to the business. The visits it brings are called organic traffic, because no one pays for each click.
- Goal: Appear in unpaid search results when people look for what you sell.
- Audience: It serves two readers at once: the person searching, and the search engine deciding which page answers them best.
- Scope: It covers the content on each page, the site's technical health, links from other sites and local listings.
- Timeframe: Results build over months, not days, and last longer than a paid campaign.
- AI era: Google now places AI-generated answers above many results, so pages must also be clear enough to be quoted.
Consider one example throughout this lesson: a home bakery in Jaipur that sells eggless cakes and takes orders through its website and WhatsApp. People nearby search for "eggless cake delivery in Jaipur". SEO decides whether the bakery's page shows up for that search, and how high.
Key Characteristics of SEO
- Organic: Positions in the main results cannot be bought. They are earned by being the most useful answer.
- Intent-led: Every search has a purpose behind it, called search intent. A page ranks when it matches that purpose.
- Cumulative: A page that ranks well keeps bringing visitors without a cost per click, and each good page supports the others.
- Measurable: Tools such as Google Search Console show which searches a page appears for and how often it is clicked.
- Shared with AI search: The same crawled and indexed pages feed both the classic results and AI answers.
How SEO Works
SEO follows the same three steps search engines use, explained in detail in how search engines work.
- Crawl: Google's crawler follows links and sitemaps to find pages. The bakery's new "Eggless Cakes" page must be linked from its home page, or listed in its sitemap, to be found.
- Index: Google reads the page and stores what it is about: eggless cakes, the flavours, prices, delivery areas in Jaipur.
- Rank: When someone searches, Google orders the indexed pages by how well they answer that search, using many signals such as relevance, quality and page experience.
- Show: The results page may include an AI Overview, a map of local businesses, and the ranked list of pages.
- Improve: The site owner reviews which searches bring visits, then improves pages that appear often but are rarely clicked.
Types of SEO
| Type | What it covers | Bakery example |
|---|---|---|
| On-page SEO | Content, titles, headings, images and internal links on each page | A page titled "Eggless Cakes in Jaipur" with flavours, prices and delivery areas |
| Technical SEO | Crawling, indexing, speed, mobile use and site structure | Fixing a slow product gallery that takes several seconds to load on mobile data |
| Off-page SEO | Links and mentions from other websites | A mention in a local food blog's list of eggless bakeries |
| Local SEO | Google Business Profile, map results and reviews | A complete profile with opening hours, photos and genuine customer reviews |
Each type has its own lesson: on-page SEO, technical SEO, off-page SEO and local SEO.
Example: SEO for a Jaipur Bakery
- Keyword: Through keyword research, the owner finds that people search "eggless cake delivery in Jaipur" and "birthday cake without egg near me".
- Page: One page targets that search. Its title, first paragraph and headings say "eggless cakes" and "Jaipur", and it lists flavours, sizes, prices and the areas covered.
- Speed: Product photos are compressed so the page loads quickly on a phone.
- Local: The Google Business Profile links to the page and carries the same name, address and phone number as the website.
- Measure: After a few weeks, Search Console shows the searches the page appears for, and the owner rewrites the title of the one that is seen often but rarely clicked. Google Analytics 4 then shows which of those visits turn into orders, set up in the GA4 tutorial.
Benefits of SEO
- Lower cost over time: Visits from organic results have no cost per click once the page ranks.
- Trust: Many searchers treat organic results as recommendations rather than advertisements.
- Lasting results: A ranked page keeps working after the effort stops, unlike an ad that stops when the budget ends.
- Insight: Search data shows what customers want, in their own words, which also guides products and ads.
Limitations of SEO
- Slow: New pages usually take months to gain positions for competitive searches.
- No guarantees: Google decides rankings, and its systems change often.
- Fewer clicks on some searches: When an AI Overview answers a simple question, fewer people may click through to any page.
- Ongoing work: Competitors improve their pages too, so rankings need regular care.
How AI Changes SEO
What AI Automates Now
AI tools can group hundreds of keywords by topic, draft page outlines and meta descriptions, suggest internal links, and summarise Search Console exports. Search engines themselves use AI to understand what a page means rather than only matching words, which is explained in the semantic search lesson.
What Still Needs a Human
Choosing which searches are worth winning, adding first-hand knowledge (the bakery's own recipes, real photos, actual delivery times), and checking every fact still need a person. Google's guidance focuses on whether content is helpful and reliable, whether or not AI helped produce it.
Risk to Watch
Publishing many AI-written pages with little original value can harm a whole site's performance in search. AI answers also mean ranking is no longer the only goal: the page must be clear enough to be cited, which is covered in SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
Do It with AI
Use this prompt to turn customer questions into a page plan for one search. It works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
You are an SEO specialist for a small business in India. Business: [what you sell, city, delivery or service area] Target search: [the search you want this page to appear for] Customer questions I hear often: [paste 5 to 10 real questions] 1. State the search intent behind the target search in one sentence. 2. Suggest a page title under 60 characters and a meta description of 140 to 155 characters, both containing the target search. 3. Give an H2 and H3 outline that answers the intent and the customer questions. 4. List facts I must supply myself (prices, areas, timings) instead of you guessing them. Do not invent prices, reviews, awards or statistics.
- Collect real questions from WhatsApp chats, calls and reviews.
- Paste them into the prompt with the business details and the target search.
- Write the page yourself from the outline, adding real photos, prices and timings.
- Publish it, link it from the home page, and check it in Search Console after a few weeks.
Check Before You Use It
- Facts: Every price, area and timing on the page must come from the business, not the AI.
- Brand fit: Rewrite the draft in the way the owner actually speaks to customers.
- Compliance: Do not copy competitors' text or photos, and do not publish reviews that are not genuine.

Question 1 / 3
1. Which three steps does a search engine perform before a page can appear in results?
Frequently Asked Questions
What is SEO in simple words?
SEO is the work of making a website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so that its pages appear when people search for what the business offers. The visits it brings are not paid for per click.
How long does SEO take to show results?
It usually takes a few months. A new page has to be crawled and indexed, and search engines need time to judge it against pages that already rank. Pages targeting specific, low-competition searches often move sooner than pages targeting broad ones.
Is SEO still useful now that Google shows AI answers?
Yes. AI Overviews and AI Mode are built from pages Google has crawled and indexed, and they link to their sources. A page that is not well optimised for search is unlikely to be used as a source for those answers either.
What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
SEO earns unpaid positions in the organic results. SEM usually means paid search ads, where a business pays each time someone clicks. Many businesses use both: ads for immediate traffic and SEO for traffic that keeps coming without a cost per click.
Can a small business do SEO without an agency?
Yes. The basics, a complete Google Business Profile, one clear page per product or service, accurate titles and descriptions, and a fast mobile site, can be done by the owner. An agency or freelancer helps most with technical problems and larger sites.
