Keyword Research with AI
Keyword research is the process of finding the words and phrases people type into search engines when they look for what you sell, then choosing which of those searches each page should target. With AI, the slow parts, brainstorming variations and grouping hundreds of keywords by meaning, now take minutes instead of days.
- Goal: Match every important page to searches that real customers make.
- Inputs: Customer language, search data from keyword tools, and what already ranks in Google.
- Output: A keyword map that pairs each page with one main keyword and its close variations.
- AI's role: AI brainstorms, groups and labels keywords, while keyword tools supply the real numbers.
- Result: Pages that answer what people actually search for, in the words they actually use.
This tutorial follows one example: a D2C snack brand from Bengaluru that sells ragi chips, millet cookies and jowar puffs on its own website and on marketplaces. The founder wants the website to rank for searches from health-conscious parents, and to be ready for Diwali gifting searches before the festive season begins.
Prerequisites for Keyword Research
- A clear offer: A list of products or services, the cities or regions served, and who buys them.
- Customer language: Questions from WhatsApp chats, marketplace reviews, customer calls and comments, in the exact words customers use.
- A spreadsheet: Google Sheets or Excel, with columns for keyword, volume, intent, difficulty and target page.
- Search Console access: If the site is live, Google Search Console shows searches the site already appears for, which is the most reliable data you have.
- An AI assistant: ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for brainstorming and grouping, used with the checks at the end of this lesson.
Setup: Choose Your Keyword Research Tools
| Tool | What it gives the snack brand | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google autocomplete and related searches | Real phrases people type, such as "ragi chips for weight loss" | No account needed |
| Google Keyword Planner | Search volume ranges and related ideas for India | Needs a Google Ads account |
| Google Trends | Whether interest in "millet snacks" is rising, and when it peaks | Compare terms and regions |
| Google Search Console | Searches the site already gets impressions for | Only for a verified site |
| Paid SEO suites such as Semrush or Ahrefs | Difficulty scores, competitor keywords, larger lists | Paid plans |
| An AI assistant | Variations, questions, grouping and labelling | Never trust its volumes |

Step-by-Step: How to Do Keyword Research
Step 1: List Seed Keywords
Seed keywords are the short, obvious words for what you sell. For the snack brand they are "ragi chips", "millet snacks", "millet cookies", "jowar puffs", "healthy snacks" and "diwali snack hamper". Write ten to twenty, taken from product names and from how customers describe the products in reviews.
Step 2: Expand with Search Suggestions and AI
Type each seed into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions, the "People also ask" questions and the related searches at the bottom of the page. Then ask an AI assistant to suggest variations a parent might type, including questions, comparisons and Hinglish phrases. For searches in Hindi, Kannada or other Indian languages, follow regional keyword research, because direct translations often miss how people really search.
Step 3: Add Search Data
Paste the list into Google Keyword Planner, or a paid tool, set the location to India, and record the volume range for each keyword. Check seasonal terms in Google Trends; searches for gift hampers usually rise in the weeks before Diwali, so that page must be live well before then.
Step 4: Judge Difficulty by Looking at the Results
Search each important keyword and look at the first page. If it is full of large marketplaces and national brands, a new site will struggle to rank. If it shows small brand sites, blogs and forum threads, there is room. Long tail keywords such as "ragi chips without palm oil" are usually easier to win and bring buyers who know what they want.
Step 5: Label the Search Intent
For each keyword, note what the searcher wants: to learn, to compare, to buy, or to reach a specific site. The method is explained in search intent. "Are millet snacks healthy for kids" is a question to answer in a guide, while "buy ragi chips online" needs a product page.
Step 6: Group Keywords into Clusters
Keyword clustering means putting searches that need the same answer into one group. A quick test is to search two keywords and compare the results: if most of the top pages are the same, one page can target both. AI assistants are good at a first grouping, which you then correct with this results check.
Step 7: Build the Keyword Map
Give each cluster one page. Existing pages get the clusters they already fit, and gaps become new pages. The map tells the writer exactly what each page is for, and it becomes the plan for on-page SEO. Related clusters, such as everything about millets for children, can then be linked together as topic clusters.
| Cluster | Main keyword | Intent | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ragi chips | buy ragi chips online | Buy | Ragi chips product page |
| Kids' snacks | healthy millet snacks for kids | Learn | New guide |
| Festive gifting | healthy diwali snack hamper | Buy | Diwali hamper page |
Common Mistakes
- Chasing the biggest number: A broad keyword like "snacks" has large volume but mixed intent and strong competitors, so it rarely brings buyers to a new brand.
- Trusting AI volumes: General AI assistants may invent search numbers that look precise; only keyword tools have real data.
- One page per keyword: Writing separate pages for "ragi chips online" and "buy ragi chips" makes the pages compete with each other.
- Ignoring intent: Pushing a product page for a question search rarely works, because Google shows guides for questions.
- Forgetting the season: Festive keywords need pages published weeks before the festival, not during it.
- Never revisiting: Search habits change, so the keyword map should be updated with Search Console data every few months.
Next Steps
- Write the pages: Turn each row of the keyword map into a page, following on-page SEO.
- Plan content around topics: Connect the guides and product pages with internal links, as explained in topic clusters.
- Track results: Watch impressions and clicks for each target keyword in Search Console.
- Think beyond rankings: Check whether AI answers mention the brand for the same questions, as covered in SEO vs GEO vs AEO.
How AI Changes Keyword Research
What AI Automates Now
AI assistants can turn a few seed words into hundreds of variations, rewrite them as the questions customers ask, group them by meaning and label their intent in one pass. Many paid keyword tools now include AI features that suggest topics and cluster keywords automatically. Search engines also match pages to searches by meaning rather than exact words, as explained in semantic search, so close variations no longer each need their own page.
What Still Needs a Human
Deciding which keywords are worth the effort depends on margins, stock, the brand's strengths and what the business can actually deliver. Only the founder knows that jowar puffs are the product with the best repeat orders, or that a hamper cannot ship to every pin code.
Risk to Watch
AI assistants can invent search volumes, trends and even keywords nobody types. Every number in the plan must come from a keyword tool or Search Console, and every keyword should be checked in a real Google search before a page is built for it.
Do It with AI
Use this prompt to expand and group a seed list. It works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and it keeps volumes out of the AI's hands.
You are an SEO keyword researcher for a business in India. Business: [what you sell, where you sell, who buys] Seed keywords: [paste 10 to 20 seed keywords] Customer questions and phrases: [paste real questions from chats and reviews] 1. Suggest 40 to 60 keyword variations Indian customers might search, including questions, comparisons, long tail phrases and common Hinglish forms. 2. Group all keywords into clusters where one page could answer the whole cluster. 3. For each cluster give: a main keyword, the search intent (learn, compare, buy or navigate), and the type of page that fits (product, category, guide or comparison). 4. Present it as a table I can paste into a spreadsheet. Do not give search volumes or difficulty scores. I will add those from a keyword tool.
- Collect seed keywords and real customer questions in one sheet.
- Run the prompt and paste the table into the sheet.
- Add volume ranges from Keyword Planner or a paid tool, and delete clusters with no real searches.
- Check the top results for each main keyword, then assign each surviving cluster to one page.
Check Before You Use It
- Facts: Every volume and trend in the final plan comes from a keyword tool, Google Trends or Search Console, not from the AI.
- Brand fit: Drop keywords for products the brand does not sell or claims it cannot make, such as medical benefits.
- Compliance: Health claims for food products are regulated in India, so a keyword like "snacks that cure diabetes" must not become a page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is keyword research in simple words?
It is the work of finding the words and phrases people type into search engines when they look for what you sell, then deciding which of those searches each page on your site should target.
Can I do keyword research without paid tools?
Yes, for a small site. Google autocomplete, the related searches at the bottom of results, Google Trends, Google Search Console and Google Keyword Planner cover the basics. Paid tools add competitor data, difficulty scores and larger keyword lists.
What are long tail keywords?
Long tail keywords are longer, more specific searches, such as 'ragi chips without palm oil' instead of 'chips'. Each one is searched less often, but together they bring a lot of traffic, and the people searching them usually know exactly what they want.
Can ChatGPT or Gemini give accurate search volumes?
No. General AI assistants do not have live search volume data unless they are connected to a keyword tool, and they may invent numbers. Use them to brainstorm and group keywords, and take volumes from a keyword tool.
How many keywords should one page target?
One main keyword plus its close variations and related questions. If two searches need different answers, they usually need two different pages.
