Quality Score and Ad Rank
Quality Score is a rating from 1 to 10 that Google Ads gives each keyword to show how relevant and useful your ads and landing pages are compared with other advertisers. It is built from three parts: expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Higher quality usually means a better position at a lower cost per click.
- Scale: Scores run from 1 to 10 and appear in the Keywords report as a column you can add.
- Parts: Expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience, each rated above average, average or below average.
- Purpose: A diagnostic tool that points to what needs fixing, rather than a number used in the auction itself.
- Link: The same qualities feed Ad Rank, which decides the order of ads in every auction.
- Effect: Better quality can mean higher positions without paying more per click.
This lesson follows one example: a physiotherapy clinic in Chennai's Anna Nagar that treats back pain, knee problems and sports injuries. It runs Search ads for searches such as "physiotherapy for back pain in Chennai" and wants appointment calls from people nearby.
Key Characteristics of Quality Score
- Keyword level: Each keyword gets its own score, so one ad group can mix strong and weak keywords.
- Relative: Each part compares your ad and page with other advertisers who showed ads for the same keyword.
- Based on history: Scores use past impressions for exact searches of the keyword, so new keywords often show no score yet.
- Separate from Ad Rank: Ad Rank is calculated fresh in each auction and also uses the bid, the search context and expected asset impact.
- Rated in words: The three parts show as above average, average or below average, which tells you where to act.
How Quality Score Works
- Expected CTR: Google estimates how likely people are to click your ad when it shows for this keyword, based on past performance. The clinic's ad for "back pain physiotherapy chennai" gets many clicks, so it scores above average.
- Ad relevance: Google checks how closely the ad's message matches the intent of the search. A keyword about sports injuries in an ad group whose ads talk only about back pain scores below average.
- Landing page experience: Google judges whether the page is useful, relevant to the search, clear and quick to use, especially on mobile.
- Score: The three ratings combine into a single number from 1 to 10 for each keyword.
- Auction: In each real auction, Google estimates quality for that exact search, adds the bid and context, and calculates Ad Rank, as explained in what is Google Ads.
| Component | What it asks | Clinic problem | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expected CTR | Will people click this ad? | Generic headline "Best Physio Clinic" | Headline that repeats the problem: "Back Pain Physiotherapy in Anna Nagar" |
| Ad relevance | Does the ad match the search? | Sports injury keyword in the back pain ad group | Move it to a sports injury ad group with its own ads |
| Landing page experience | Is the page useful and easy? | Slow home page with no mention of knee pain | A fast knee pain page with timings, fees and a call button |
Example: Raising Quality Score at a Chennai Physio Clinic
- Before: All keywords sit in one ad group with one ad, and every click goes to the home page. Many keywords show scores of 3 to 5.
- Split: The owner creates three ad groups, back pain, knee pain and sports injuries, following Google Ads account structure.
- Ads: Each ad group gets a responsive search ad whose headlines repeat its problem and area, written as shown in Search campaigns step by step.
- Pages: Each ad group points to its own page with a clear description of treatment, session length, timings and a click to call button.
- Speed: Large images are compressed, which improves loading on mobile data, measured with Core Web Vitals.
- After: Weeks later, ad relevance and landing page ratings improve for most keywords. The clinic does not guess the gain; it compares cost per call before and after in its own reports.
Benefits of a Higher Quality Score
- Cost: Better quality can lower the price needed to keep a position.
- Position: Ads can appear higher without a bigger bid.
- Eligibility: Ads with low quality may not show at all, because each position has a minimum threshold.
- Clarity: The three ratings point to exactly which part, the ad or the page, needs work.
Limitations of Quality Score
- Delayed: Scores update slowly, so a change may take weeks to show.
- Incomplete: Many keywords show no score because of low volume.
- Misleading alone: Chasing a 10 can distract from profit; a keyword scoring 5 may still bring cheap patients.
- Search only: Quality Score is reported for Search keywords, not for Performance Max or video campaigns.
How AI Changes Quality Score
What AI Automates Now
Google's AI estimates quality for every single auction in real time, and responsive search ads let it choose the headline combination most likely to be clicked for each search. With broad match and other keyword match types, AI also decides which searches a keyword is relevant to.
What Still Needs a Human
A person still writes ads that speak to the real problem, builds the right landing pages, and decides whether a low scoring keyword is worth keeping. AI tools can suggest headlines, but only the clinic knows its treatments, fees and timings.
Risk to Watch
AI-written headlines can raise click-through rate with claims the clinic cannot support, such as promised pain relief. More clicks from the wrong promise hurt conversions and can break health advertising rules. Improve the page along with the ad, using landing page optimization with AI.

Check Before You Use It
- Facts: Every treatment, fee and timing in new headlines must be true today.
- Brand fit: Health ads should sound calm and professional, never alarming.
- Compliance: Avoid promises of cure or guaranteed results, which break Google Ads healthcare rules and Indian norms on medical advertising.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good Quality Score in Google Ads?
Scores run from 1 to 10. A score of 7 or above usually means the ad and page are relevant, but the number matters less than its three parts. A keyword with a lower score can still be profitable if it brings customers at an acceptable cost.
Does Quality Score directly decide my ad position?
Not directly. Quality Score is a diagnostic summary shown at keyword level. The auction uses real-time estimates of ad quality for each search, together with the bid and other factors, to calculate Ad Rank. Improving what Quality Score measures usually improves Ad Rank too.
Why does my keyword show no Quality Score?
Keywords with too few impressions or searches show a blank score, marked with a dash in the column, until Google has enough data. New keywords and rarely searched keywords often stay blank for some time.
How can I improve landing page experience?
Send each ad group to a page that answers the exact search, make it load quickly on mobile, keep the offer in the ad and on the page the same, and make contact details and the next step easy to find.
