Google Shopping Ads and Merchant Center

Google Shopping Ads are product ads that show a photo, title, price and store name on Google search results and the Shopping tab, built from product data you keep in Google Merchant Center. This tutorial sets up Merchant Center, builds a product feed, fixes common disapprovals and launches a first Shopping campaign in Google Ads.

  • Merchant Center: Where your store details, shipping, returns and product feed live.
  • Feed: A list of every product with its title, price, image, stock and identifiers.
  • Google Ads: Where you create the campaign, set the budget and choose bidding.
  • Matching: Google matches searches to products using the feed, so feed quality decides reach.
  • Campaigns: Standard Shopping or Performance Max can both use the same feed.
From store to Shopping ad: website, Merchant Center feed, Google AdsThe Kanpur footwear brand's Shopify store sends its product pages to Merchant Center as a feed with attributes such as title, price in rupees, image link, availability, brand and MPN, and size and colour. Google Ads uses the feed in a Shopping or Performance Max campaign. The result is a Shopping ad on Google showing a photo of men's tan leather loafers, the title, the price of 2,799 rupees and the brand's store name.No keywords: the product feed decides what can matchYour storeShopify siteproduct pagesMerchant Centertitleprice: 2799 INRimage_linkavailabilitybrand, mpnsize, colorGoogle AdsShopping orPerformance Maxproduct photoMen's Tan LeatherLoafers, Size 9Rs 2,799Brand storeShopping ad on GoogleSimplified illustration: real ad layouts vary by surface and device

This tutorial follows one example: a D2C leather footwear brand from Kanpur that sells loafers, sandals and formal shoes for men and women on its own Shopify store. It accepts UPI, cards and cash on delivery, and wants its shoes to appear when people search for leather footwear on Google.

Prerequisites for Google Shopping Ads

  • Store: A live website with product pages, prices in rupees, a checkout and clear contact details.
  • Policies: Visible return, refund and shipping policies on the website.
  • Accounts: A Google Ads account and a business Google account to create Merchant Center.
  • Tracking: Purchase tracking with order value, set up in Google Ads conversion tracking.
  • Photos: Clear product images on a plain background with no added text or watermarks.

Setup: Create and Verify Merchant Center

  1. Go to Google Merchant Center and create an account with the business name and country set to India.
  2. Website: Add the store's address and verify and claim it, either through the Shopify app, a tag, or Search Console.
  3. Shipping: Add shipping rules, such as delivery times and charges by order value, matching what checkout actually shows.
  4. Returns: Add the return window and conditions, the same as the returns page on the site.
  5. Business: Add a phone number and business address, since Google may ask to verify them.

Step-by-Step: Build the Feed and Launch

Step 1: Choose How to Send Products

  • Apps: Shopify and other platforms have Google apps that sync products automatically. This suits most small stores.
  • Google Sheets: A sheet template, useful for small catalogues without a platform app.
  • Files: A scheduled file or the Content API, used by larger catalogues and custom sites.

Step 2: Fill in the Key Attributes

Each product needs these attributes. The example below is one row of the footwear brand's feed:

Example
id: KNP-LOAF-TAN-09
title: Men's Tan Leather Loafers, Handstitched, Size 9
description: Full grain leather loafers with a cushioned insole...
link: https://example.com/products/tan-leather-loafers
image_link: https://example.com/images/tan-loafers-9.jpg
availability: in_stock
price: 2799.00 INR
brand: [Brand name]
identifier_exists: no
mpn: LOAF-TAN
condition: new
color: Tan
size: 9
gender: male
age_group: adult
  • Title: Put what the product is first, then material, colour, key feature and size, following product feed optimization with AI.
  • Identifiers: Own-label shoes without barcodes state that no identifier exists. Never invent a GTIN.
  • Variants: Footwear needs colour, size, gender and age group so Google can show the right variant.

Step 3: Fix Diagnostics

Open the products diagnostics area and fix every issue before launching.

ProblemCause at the footwear storeFix
Price mismatchA sale price changed on the site but not in the feedSync the feed more often, or add sale price with dates
Image rejected"20% OFF" text added on the photoUse a clean photo; show offers through promotions instead
Missing shippingNo shipping rule for orders under a set valueAdd rules that cover every order size
Out of stock mismatchSize 10 sold out but feed says in stockKeep the app sync on, and set stock by variant

In Merchant Center, find the linked accounts or apps area, send a link request to the Google Ads customer ID, and approve it in Google Ads.

Step 5: Create the Campaign

  1. In Google Ads, create a new campaign with the Sales objective.
  2. Choose Shopping for Standard Shopping, or Performance Max to use the feed across more channels, explained in Performance Max.
  3. Select the Merchant Center account and the country of sale, India.
  4. Bidding: Start with Maximize clicks or Maximize conversion value. Move to a ROAS target once there are steady sales, as covered in Smart Bidding.
  5. Budget: Set a daily budget you can sustain for several weeks of learning.

Step 6: Split Products by Value

Create product groups by category or custom label, such as "loafers", "sandals" and "formal". Custom labels are extra columns in the feed that only you see, and they let you group products by anything useful, such as margin band, season or best sellers. Give more budget to high-margin groups, using a custom label for margin and your break-even ROAS per product.

Step 7: Review Weekly

The first few weeks teach you which products and searches actually sell, so set aside time every week to read the reports rather than only checking total revenue.

  • Searches: Add negatives such as "repair", "second hand" and "wholesale".
  • Products: Find products with many clicks but no sales, then check price, photos and reviews on the page.
  • Health: Recheck diagnostics after every sale or price change.

Common Mistakes

  • Mismatches: Feed prices or stock that differ from the site are the most common cause of disapprovals.
  • Titles: A title like "Loafer 102" gives Google nothing to match searches with.
  • Identifiers: Made-up GTINs can get products or the account suspended.
  • Images: Text, badges or watermarks on product photos break image rules.
  • Grouping: A single product group lets cheap, low-margin items take most of the budget.
  • Values: Without order value, bidding cannot tell a Rs 999 sandal from a Rs 4,999 shoe.

How AI Changes Google Shopping Ads

What AI Automates Now

Google's AI matches searches to products using the feed, sets bids, and can suggest better titles or generate product images with new backgrounds. Merchant Center also offers AI tools for product content in some regions. General AI tools can rewrite hundreds of titles from a spreadsheet in minutes.

What Still Needs a Human

Someone must check that every size, material and price in the rewritten titles is true, choose which products deserve budget, and keep the website and feed in sync. AI can write "genuine leather" into a title for a product that is not.

Risk to Watch

AI-edited images can change how a product looks, such as the colour of the leather. That leads to returns, unhappy customers and possible policy problems. Keep the original product photo as the main image and review any generated image before use.

Do It with AI

Use this prompt to rewrite product titles for the feed. It works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

You are a Google Merchant Center feed specialist for Indian D2C brands. Category: [e.g. men's leather footwear] Products: [paste id, current title, material, colour, size, gender, key feature] 1. Rewrite each title as: product type, material, colour, key feature, size. Keep it under 150 characters. 2. Put the words shoppers are most likely to search first. 3. Flag any product where the data is missing or unclear, instead of guessing. 4. Return the result as a table with id, old title and new title. Use only the data given. Do not add materials, features or claims that are not in my list.

  1. Export the products from Merchant Center or the store as a sheet.
  2. Run the prompt in batches of 50 to 100 products.
  3. Check every new title against the product page and the physical product.
  4. Upload the changes through a supplemental feed or the store, then recheck diagnostics.

Check Before You Use It

  • Facts: Material, size and colour in every title must match the real product.
  • Brand fit: Keep the brand name and product naming style consistent across the catalogue.
  • Compliance: Follow Google Shopping policies on misrepresentation and image rules, and Indian e-commerce rules on showing the country of origin and seller details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Merchant Center the same as Google Ads?

No. Merchant Center holds your product data, shipping and return settings, and store details. Google Ads holds the campaigns, budgets and bids. You link the two so Google Ads can build Shopping ads from the products in Merchant Center.

Do I need a GTIN for every product?

Products sold by other retailers usually need the manufacturer's GTIN, which is the barcode number. For your own handmade or private label products without barcodes, you can tell Google that no identifier exists. Check the current identifier rules for your category.

Why are my products disapproved in Merchant Center?

Common reasons are a price or stock status that does not match the website, missing shipping or return details, images with promotional text or watermarks, and missing identifiers. The Diagnostics or Needs attention area lists each problem and the products affected.

Should I use Standard Shopping or Performance Max?

Standard Shopping gives more control over which products get budget and shows search terms clearly, which helps when starting. Performance Max uses the same feed across more channels with more automation. Many stores start with one and test the other once tracking and feed quality are solid.

Can products appear on Google without paying for ads?

Yes. Merchant Center can show products in unpaid product listings on Google surfaces such as the Shopping tab. Paid Shopping ads add more prominent placements and reach. Check which unpaid surfaces are available in India.
