Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

Conversion rate optimization (CRO) is the practice of increasing the share of website visitors who complete a valuable action, such as buying, booking a demo or starting a trial. Instead of paying for more traffic, CRO studies why current visitors leave, then fixes and tests the pages, forms and offers that stop them.

  • Conversion rate: Conversions divided by visitors, shown as a percentage.
  • Funnel: The sequence of steps a visitor takes, from first visit to the final action.
  • Leak: The step where the largest share of visitors abandons the journey.
  • Research first: Analytics, recordings, surveys and support chats explain why people leave.
  • Test or fix: Obvious bugs get fixed immediately, while uncertain ideas get tested.

A SaaS sign-up funnel, step by step, with the form as the biggest leak

This lesson follows one example: a SaaS startup in Bengaluru that sells billing and inventory software to kirana stores and small retailers. Its website receives about 20,000 visitors a month, mostly from Google search ads and Instagram, and 400 of them start a 14-day trial, a 2 percent conversion rate. The startup spends ₹3,00,000 a month on ads, so each trial costs ₹750.

Why Conversion Rate Optimization Matters

Every improvement in conversion rate makes existing ad spend work harder. If the startup's rate rose from 2 percent to 2.5 percent with the same traffic, it would receive 500 trials instead of 400, and the cost per trial would fall from ₹750 to ₹600 without spending another rupee. That lower cost also lets the team bid more competitively in ad auctions. CRO also produces customer understanding, because researching why shopkeepers hesitate reveals which fears, features and words matter to them, which then improves ads, sales calls and onboarding.

Step-by-Step Framework for Conversion Rate Optimization

Step 1: Confirm Tracking Works

Before analysing anything, confirm that every important action is recorded correctly as an event, including form starts, form completions and the first invoice created inside the app. Broken tracking produces imaginary leaks. The GA4 events and conversions lesson explains how to set these up.

Step 2: Map the Funnel and Find the Leak

Write down each step with the number of visitors who reach it. The startup's monthly funnel looked like this:

StepVisitorsShare of the previous step
Visited the website20,000
Viewed the pricing page5,00025%
Started the sign-up form1,00020%
Finished sign-up40040%
Created a first invoice within 7 days16040%

The biggest leak is the form: 600 of the 1,000 people who started it, or 60 percent, abandoned it. Checking that step by device showed that most abandonment happened on mobile phones.

Step 3: Find Out Why People Leave

Numbers show where visitors leave, and research shows why. Use session recordings and heatmaps from a tool such as Microsoft Clarity, a one-question survey on the pricing page, and the questions customers ask on calls and WhatsApp. The startup's recordings showed shopkeepers typing GST numbers, waiting for an OTP that arrived late, and leaving when the form asked for the shop's full address.

Step 4: List and Rank Ideas

Turn each finding into an idea, then rank the ideas so the team works on the best ones first. A simple method is ICE scoring: rate Impact, Confidence and Ease from 1 to 10, then take the average.

Step 5: Fix the Obvious, Test the Uncertain

A slow OTP or a broken button on some phones is a bug, so fix it immediately. A new headline or a different pricing layout is uncertain, so test it with A/B testing when traffic allows. Low-traffic pages can instead be changed and monitored carefully over several weeks.

Step 6: Improve the Pages That Matter

Most gains come from the few pages that receive paid traffic and sit just before the conversion. For those pages, work through message match, clarity, trust and speed, as explained in landing page optimization. Page speed on low-cost Android phones and slower mobile connections matters a great deal in India, and the Core Web Vitals lesson covers how it is measured.

Step 7: Measure the Whole Funnel, Then Repeat

A change that raises sign-ups but lowers the share of users who create a first invoice has not really helped. Check the full funnel after every change, record what you learned, and return to Step 2 with the next leak.

CRO Audit Checklist

Example
TRACKING
[ ] Every key action (form start, sign-up, purchase) is recorded once
[ ] Campaign links carry UTM parameters
[ ] Internal team visits are filtered out

FUNNEL
[ ] Visitors and conversion rate known for each step
[ ] Biggest leak identified, split by device and channel

SPEED AND MOBILE
[ ] Main pages load quickly on a mid-range Android phone on 4G
[ ] Buttons, forms and menus work with one thumb
[ ] No pop-up covers the main content on mobile

MESSAGE
[ ] Headline matches the ad or search that brought the visitor
[ ] The offer and price are clear within a few seconds
[ ] Content is available in the languages customers use

TRUST
[ ] Genuine reviews or customer logos, shared with permission
[ ] Clear contact details, refund or cancellation policy
[ ] Security and payment options (UPI, cards) visible where relevant

FORMS AND CHECKOUT
[ ] Only the fields you truly need at this stage
[ ] Clear error messages and working OTP delivery
[ ] No surprise charges at the final step

FOLLOW-UP
[ ] Opted-in users who drop off get a helpful reminder
[ ] Every change and test result is recorded in a log

  • First action: The late OTP was a bug, so the developers switched to a faster delivery setup before anything else.
  • First test: The shorter form scored highest, so the team tested a 4-field form against the 9-field version, with the shop address collected later inside the app.
  • Guard metric: The team watched first invoices created, not only sign-ups, to make sure the shorter form did not attract people who never used the product.
  • Next idea: The pricing page change was quick and low risk, so it went into the queue for the following test.

The team does not predict a result in advance; the test decides. What matters is that each step is based on evidence from its own funnel.

Mistakes in Conversion Rate Optimization

  • Copying other sites: A layout that works for a large marketplace may not suit a small software company with a different audience.
  • Chasing the top of the funnel only: More sign-ups mean little if users never become paying customers.
  • Testing trivia: Button colours rarely matter as much as the offer, the form and the page speed.
  • Ignoring mobile: Many Indian visitors browse on phones, so desktop-only reviews miss the real problems.
  • Dark patterns: Fake scarcity, hidden charges and pre-ticked boxes may raise short-term conversions but damage trust and can break consumer rules.

How AI Changes Conversion Rate Optimization

What AI Automates Now

AI tools can summarise hundreds of session recordings, group survey answers into themes, draft alternative headlines and form copy, and translate pages into regional languages for review. Some analytics tools highlight frustration signals, such as repeated taps on the same spot, automatically.

What Still Needs a Human

People decide which leak matters most to the business, judge whether a finding is real or a tracking fault, and talk directly to customers. A shopkeeper's worry about data safety or GST accuracy rarely appears in a heatmap, but it comes up quickly on a phone call.

Risk to Watch

AI can produce a long list of confident suggestions that are not based on your own data. Treat every AI idea as a hypothesis until your funnel evidence or a test supports it, and never paste personal customer data into an AI tool.

Do It with AI

Use this prompt to turn funnel numbers into a ranked list of fixes. It works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini

You are a conversion rate optimization specialist for a business in India. Business and audience: [what you sell and to whom] Main conversion: [purchase, trial, booking or lead] Funnel for the last 30 days: [each step with visitor numbers] Research notes: [what recordings, surveys and customer questions show] 1. Calculate the step-by-step conversion rates and name the biggest leak. 2. List five ideas to fix that leak, each linked to a specific research note. 3. Score each idea for Impact, Confidence and Ease from 1 to 10 and give the average. 4. Say which ideas are bugs to fix now and which need an A/B test. Do not invent data, benchmarks or customer quotes.

  1. Pull the funnel numbers from GA4 for the last 30 days.
  2. Add real notes from recordings, surveys and support conversations.
  3. Run the prompt and recalculate the step rates yourself.
  4. Fix the bugs, then test the top-ranked idea and log the result.

Check Before You Use It

  • Facts: Every feature, price and claim on the changed pages must be accurate.
  • Brand fit: New copy should sound like the brand and suit its customers, including their language.
  • Compliance: Follow-up messages go only to people who opted in, and no page may use hidden charges or fake urgency.

Question 1 / 3

  1. 1. The SaaS startup gets 400 trial sign-ups from 20,000 visitors. What is its conversion rate?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is conversion rate optimization in simple words?

Conversion rate optimization, or CRO, is the work of getting a larger share of your existing visitors to take the action you want, such as buying, booking or signing up. It improves the website and the offer instead of buying more traffic.

How do you calculate conversion rate?

Divide the number of conversions by the number of visitors or sessions, then multiply by 100. For example, 400 sign-ups from 20,000 visitors is a 2 percent conversion rate. Always state which visitors and which action you are counting.

What is a good conversion rate?

It depends on the industry, the price, the traffic source and what counts as a conversion, so general averages are not very useful. The most useful comparison is your own rate over time, by page, device and channel.

What is a CRO audit?

A CRO audit is a structured review of a website's funnel, pages, forms, speed, trust signals and tracking, aimed at finding where visitors drop off and why. It ends with a ranked list of fixes and tests.

Is CRO only about A/B testing?

No. A/B testing is one way to prove that a change works, but CRO also includes research, fixing obvious bugs, improving speed and clarifying the offer. Clear errors, such as a broken form on mobile, should simply be fixed without a test.
