Keyword Match Types and Broad Match
Keyword match types are the settings in Google Ads that decide how closely a person's search must match your keyword before your ad can show. There are three: exact, phrase and broad match, plus negative keywords that block searches you do not want. Choosing them well decides both your reach and how much budget you waste.
- Exact match: The narrowest option, for searches with the same meaning as the keyword.
- Phrase match: Searches that include the meaning of the keyword, often with extra words around it.
- Broad match: The widest option, for related searches, guided by AI signals.
- Negative keywords: Words or phrases that stop an ad from showing at all.
- Stakes: The same keyword can bring buyers or waste money depending on its match type.
This lesson follows one example: an air conditioner repair and servicing business in Kochi. Its technicians visit homes and offices across Ernakulam, and it wants calls from people with a broken or leaking AC, especially during the hot months before the monsoon.
Key Characteristics of Keyword Match Types
- Meaning: All three match types now match by meaning, not only by exact spelling. Exact match also covers close variants such as plurals, misspellings and a different word order.
- Symbols: Exact match uses square brackets, phrase match uses quotation marks, and broad match has no symbol.
- Tradeoff: Each step from exact to broad brings more searches but less control over which ones.
- Strictness: Negative keywords do not expand to synonyms, so you add variants yourself.
- Bidding: Broad match works best with Smart Bidding, which can lower bids on weak searches.
How Keyword Match Types Work
- Search: Someone in Kakkanad types "split ac not cooling repair near me".
- Comparison: It compares the search with each keyword in the account and its match type.
- Exact match: The keyword [ac repair kochi] would not match this search, because "not cooling" and "near me" change the meaning slightly.
- Phrase match: The keyword "ac repair" can match, because the search includes the meaning of an AC repair.
- Broad match: The keyword ac service could match too, and broad match can also match searches like "ac leaking water what to do". It uses signals such as the landing page, the other keywords in the ad group and the searcher's recent searches to judge relevance.
- Exclusion: If "course" or "jobs" is a negative keyword, searches containing it are blocked, whatever the match type.
- Ranking: If several keywords in the account match, Google prefers an identical exact match keyword, then uses Ad Rank to choose between the rest.
| Match type | Symbol | Keyword | Can match | Will not match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exact | [ ] | [ac repair kochi] | kochi ac repair, ac repairs kochi | ac repair course kochi |
| Phrase | " " | "ac repair" | split ac repair in edappally | ac installation price |
| Broad | none | ac service | ac gas refill near me, ac leaking water | usually unrelated searches |
| Negative | minus list | course | blocks ac repair course kochi | only blocks searches with that word |
Example: Match Types for the Kochi AC Service
- Core: [ac repair kochi], [ac service ernakulam] and [split ac repair near me] cover the searches that bring most calls.
- Problems: "ac gas refill" and "ac not cooling" catch longer searches that describe a problem.
- Experiment: A single ad group with broad keywords runs with Maximize conversions, and the search terms report is read every few days.
- Negatives: "course", "jobs", "technician salary", "car ac" and "manual pdf" are blocked, because the business does not repair car ACs or train technicians.
- Lessons: Broad match finds searches such as "ac water dripping indoor unit", which the owner had never thought to add, and some searches that are useless and become new negatives.
Benefits of Using Match Types Well
- Efficiency: Exact and phrase keywords keep budget on searches the business can serve.
- Discovery: Broad match finds the unusual ways people describe a problem, including Malayalam and English mixed searches.
- Insight: The search terms report shows the real words customers use, useful for keyword research and landing pages.
- Relevance: Tight keywords make it easier to write ads that match, supporting a higher Quality Score.
Limitations of Keyword Match Types
- Looseness: Close variants mean even exact match shows ads for searches you did not type.
- Drift: Without good conversion data, it may match loosely related searches.
- Visibility: Google does not show every search term in reports, usually for privacy reasons, so some matched searches stay invisible.
- Upkeep: Negative keyword lists need regular updates as new unwanted searches appear.
How AI Changes Keyword Match Types
What AI Automates Now
Broad match is now an AI system rather than a simple word match. It reads the landing page and the ad group to guess relevance, and features such as AI Max for Search go further by matching searches with no keyword at all. The ideas behind meaning-based matching are explained in semantic search.
What Still Needs a Human
A person still decides which services the business really offers, reads the search terms report, and adds negatives. The AI cannot know that the Kochi service does not repair car ACs unless the landing page and negatives make it clear.
Risk to Watch
When broad match and automated bidding are switched on together without good tracking, spend can rise fast on searches that never lead to calls. Keep conversion tracking accurate and check new search terms at least weekly.
Do It with AI
Use this prompt to sort a search terms report into keep, negative and new keyword lists. It works in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini.
You are a Google Ads search terms analyst for a local service business in India. Business: [what you do, city, areas served] What we do NOT offer: [services, products or audiences to exclude] Search terms export: [paste search term, clicks, cost, conversions] 1. Sort each search term into: keep, add as negative, or add as a new keyword. 2. For negatives, suggest the shortest word or phrase to block, and whether it should be phrase or exact negative. 3. For new keywords, suggest a match type and the ad group they belong in. 4. List any search terms where the intent is unclear, for me to decide. Use only the terms and numbers in the export. Do not invent search volumes.
- Export the search terms report for the last 30 days.
- Remove any column that shows personal data before pasting.
- Run the prompt and review every suggested negative before adding it.
- Add the approved negatives to a shared list and repeat each week.
Check Before You Use It
- Facts: Check that a suggested negative does not also block searches that bring real calls.
- Brand fit: New keywords should match services the business actually provides.
- Compliance: Do not bid on competitors' trademarked names in ad text, and follow Google Ads trademark rules.

Question 1 / 3
1. The Kochi AC service uses the exact match keyword [ac repair kochi]. Which search can still trigger the ad?
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the three keyword match types in Google Ads?
Exact match, phrase match and broad match. Exact match is the narrowest and shows ads for searches with the same meaning as the keyword. Phrase match includes the meaning of the keyword within a longer search. Broad match is the widest and can show ads for related searches.
Is broad match good or bad?
It depends on the setup. With reliable conversion tracking and Smart Bidding, broad match can find useful searches you would not have listed. Without them, it often spends on loosely related searches that never convert. Test it next to your existing keywords rather than switching everything at once.
Do negative keywords match close variants?
Negative keywords are stricter than normal keywords and generally do not expand to close variants, synonyms or misspellings. Add the plural, common misspellings and local spellings of a negative yourself if you want to block them too.
What is the symbol for each match type?
Exact match is written in square brackets, such as [ac repair kochi]. Phrase match is written in quotation marks, such as "ac repair kochi". Broad match has no symbol, so ac repair kochi on its own is broad.
