Summary:

UST is looking for Senior UX Designer

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Senior Technical Artist / Level Designer with strong expertise in Unity3D, AR/VR environment development, Physically Based Rendering (PBR), shaders, lighting, and real-time optimization.

The candidate will design, assemble, and optimize immersive AR/VR environments while maintaining high visual quality and stable performance across standalone and PC-based XR platforms. This role requires a balance of creative environment design and hands-on technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Level and Environment Design

Design and build immersive AR/VR environments in Unity3D.

Create effective spatial layouts, navigation paths, interaction zones, and user journeys.

Develop level blockouts and convert them into production-ready environments.

Ensure appropriate scale, proportions, visibility, accessibility, and user comfort.

Organize Unity scenes, prefabs, assets, lighting, and interactive elements efficiently.

Work with UX designers and developers to implement intuitive spatial interactions.

Iterate on environments based on user testing, performance results, and stakeholder feedback.

PBR Materials and Texturing

Create, configure, and optimize PBR materials for real-time AR/VR applications.

Work with albedo or base color, normal, metallic, roughness or smoothness, ambient occlusion, height, and emission maps.

Ensure physically accurate material response under different lighting conditions.

Maintain consistent texel density, texture resolution, and material quality across environments.

Create reusable materials, material instances, trim sheets, texture atlases, and modular asset libraries.

Review imported 3D assets for correct UVs, normals, tangents, texture maps, and material configuration.

Troubleshoot PBR issues such as incorrect reflections, excessive smoothness, visible seams, normal-map problems, and inconsistent lighting.

Optimize texture formats, compression settings, mipmaps, and texture memory for XR devices.

Shaders and Rendering

Create and modify shaders using Unity Shader Graph.

Develop and optimize shaders for surfaces, transparency, reflections, effects, and environment interactions.

Work with Unity URP as the primary rendering pipeline.

Understand the use cases and limitations of Built-in Render Pipeline, URP, and HDRP.

Minimize shader complexity, variants, keywords, texture samples, and expensive rendering operations.

Configure materials and shaders for mobile GPUs and standalone VR headsets.

Support custom shader implementation using HLSL when required.

Diagnose visual and performance issues using Unity Frame Debugger and GPU profiling tools.

Lighting and Visual Quality

Design and configure lighting for immersive AR/VR environments.

Work with baked, mixed, and real-time lighting based on platform requirements.

Configure lightmaps, reflection probes, light probes, shadows, and post-processing.

Ensure PBR materials respond consistently to environmental lighting.

Balance visual fidelity with GPU, memory, thermal, and frame-rate constraints.

Reduce lighting artifacts, light leaks, shadow issues, and inconsistent reflections.

Maintain visual consistency across AR, standalone VR, and PC-VR platforms.

Performance Optimization

Profile Unity scenes using Unity Profiler, Memory Profiler, Frame Debugger, and platform-specific tools.

Optimize draw calls, SetPass calls, batches, triangles, vertices, shader complexity, overdraw, and texture memory.

Implement LOD Groups, occlusion culling, static batching, GPU instancing, and mesh optimization.

Optimize transparent materials, particle effects, reflections, shadows, and post-processing.

Reduce unnecessary material variations and shader variants.

Establish performance budgets for models, textures, materials, lighting, and effects.

Maintain target frame rates required for comfortable AR/VR experiences.

Identify whether performance bottlenecks are CPU-bound, GPU-bound, memory-related, or asset-related.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work closely with 3D Artists, Technical Artists, UX Designers, and Unity Developers.

Define asset creation and Unity import standards.

Review environments for visual quality, technical correctness, and performance.

Provide guidance on PBR workflows, shaders, lighting, and XR optimization.

Document scene-building standards, performance budgets, material guidelines, and optimization practices.

Required Qualifications

6+ years of experience in Technical Art, Level Design, Environment Design, or real-time 3D production.

Strong hands-on experience with Unity3D.

Experience designing and delivering AR/VR environments.

Strong knowledge of PBR materials and physically based shading principles.

Experience with Unity Shader Graph, materials, lighting, and post-processing.

Strong understanding of Unity URP.

Experience with spatial design, scene composition, scale, navigation, and user flow.

Experience profiling and optimizing applications using:

o Unity Profiler

o Unity Memory Profiler

o Unity Frame Debugger

o RenderDoc or equivalent GPU profiling tools

Understanding of UV mapping, texel density, normal maps, texture atlases, mipmaps, and texture compression.

Experience optimizing content for standalone VR or mobile XR devices.

Working knowledge of Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Substance 3D Painter, or similar tools.

Basic C# knowledge for Unity implementation and editor workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Meta Quest, HoloLens, Apple Vision Pro, Pico, HTC Vive, or PC-VR platforms.

Experience with OpenXR, XR Interaction Toolkit, and AR Foundation.

Knowledge of HLSL and custom shader development.

Experience with Unreal Engine materials and environment workflows.

Experience with digital twins, enterprise visualization, training, simulation, or industrial AR/VR applications.

Knowledge of modular environment design and procedural content workflows.

Experience with Substance 3D Designer and Substance 3D Painter.

They should be capable of delivering visually compelling environments without compromising the performance and comfort requirements of AR/VR platforms.

A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a specialization in Deep Learning or Computer Vision is highly desirable
