Forward Deployed Engineer: What the Role Is and How to Get It

Deploy the system inside someone else's stack, then stand in front of the client and defend it.

Billed every year. One subscription, 35 courses, every program included.

A forward deployed engineer works inside a customer's company to get an AI product running on their real systems and data. Part of the job is building: connecting tools, writing the workflows, fixing what breaks. The other part is the client: finding the real blocker, showing working software and keeping the sponsor informed.

The title varies. Job ads also say solutions engineer, deployment engineer or implementation engineer for similar work. AI companies hire for it, and so do the consultancies and software firms rolling AI out to their clients.

This path is built for people coming from procurement, supply chain and operations who want to move into the role. It starts with your setup and Claude Code basics, moves on to deploying inside a procurement stack, and ends with the forward deployed engineer course and interview preparation.

Forward Deployed Engineer Program FAQ

What is a forward deployed engineer?

An engineer who works inside a customer's organisation to get an AI product running on their real systems and data, part builder and part consultant.

Is a forward deployed engineer the same as a solutions engineer?

They overlap. A solutions engineer usually works before the sale, showing what a product can do. A forward deployed engineer usually works after it, inside the customer's systems, making it work on real data. Many job ads mix the two.

Do I need coding experience?

Claude Code for Absolute Beginners is part of the path, so you can start from zero. Developers move through the early courses faster.
