About Position:

We are seeking a seasoned Apache Cassandra Architect to enhance our production Java application by integrating Apache Cassandra support. Currently, our application operates on PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, and MySQL. The successful candidate will ensure low latency and high availability through Cassandra's multi-region capabilities. You will review ongoing work, define the target architecture, and guide our engineering team to ensure a smooth transition and implementation.

Role: Apache Cassandra Architect
Location: All Persistent Locations
Experience: 11 to 15 Years
Job Type: Full Time Employment

What You'll Do:

Review the existing Cassandra data model and recommend improvements to achieve latency, availability, and scalability goals.
Define the multi-region architecture, including replication strategy, consistency levels, failover behavior, and capacity planning.
Establish best practices for the Java data access layer, focusing on DataStax Java Driver configuration, load balancing, retries, and query patterns.
Identify and mitigate risks such as hot partitions, large partitions, tombstones, and consistency anomalies.
Design zero-downtime, no-data-loss migration strategies from RDBMS to Cassandra, including CDC, dual-write, and shadow-read approaches.
Guide the design of customer-run migration and verification tooling.
Define performance testing approaches and target benchmarks across regions.
Recommend operational practices for customer deployments, including compaction, repair, monitoring, and backup/restore strategies.
Document architecture decisions and mentor the engineering team through design reviews and code reviews.

Expertise You'll Bring:

11 to 15 years of experience in Software Architecture, Distributed Systems, Database Engineering, and Enterprise Platform Development.
8+ years of hands-on production experience with Apache Cassandra, including architecture, data modeling, and performance tuning at scale.
Deep expertise in Cassandra data modeling, partition key design, clustering strategies, denormalization techniques, and query-driven schema design.
Strong experience designing and managing multi-region Cassandra deployments for low-latency, high-availability environments.
Extensive knowledge of replication strategies, consistency levels, topology design, failover mechanisms, and disaster recovery planning.
Proven experience integrating Cassandra into applications originally built on relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, and CockroachDB.
Strong expertise in zero-downtime migration methodologies including CDC, dual-write patterns, shadow reads, cutover planning, and validation frameworks.
Hands-on experience with Apache Cassandra operational best practices including compaction, repair, backup, restore, monitoring, and capacity management.
Deep knowledge of Cassandra performance optimization including tombstone management, hotspot avoidance, partition sizing, read/write optimization, and cluster tuning.
Extensive experience with DataStax Java Driver, including driver configuration, load balancing policies, retry policies, connection management, and performance tuning.
Strong understanding of distributed system concepts including consistency models, quorum mechanisms, partition tolerance, fault tolerance, and eventual consistency.
Experience designing scalable, resilient, and fault-tolerant backend systems.
Strong knowledge of Java-based backend systems and enterprise application architectures.
Experience with Spring Boot, Tomcat, or similar Java application frameworks.
Familiarity with Cassandra Storage-Attached Indexes (SAI) and advanced Cassandra capabilities.
Experience with IBM CDC, change data capture frameworks, and enterprise data migration platforms.
Familiarity with Kafka and event-driven architectures for data synchronization and migration workloads.
Experience deploying and managing Cassandra on Kubernetes environments.
Exposure to managed Cassandra offerings such as DataStax Astra and Amazon Keyspaces.
Experience leveraging Agentic AI coding tools and AI-assisted engineering workflows to improve productivity and modernization efforts.
Proven consulting experience with the ability to rapidly assess environments, identify risks, and provide actionable architectural guidance.
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Experience mentoring engineering teams and establishing long-term engineering best practices.
Strong analytical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
Ability to work independently while driving architecture decisions and technical strategy.
Demonstrated success delivering high-performance, highly available, and scalable distributed data platforms in enterprise environments.
