About the role

The Senior AI Engineer is a hands-on senior engineering role in the Data and AI Office, reporting to the Head of AI Engineering. The role designs, builds and operationalises secure, production-grade AI agents, Copilot extensions and reusable enterprise capabilities.

The role combines the depth of an experienced AI developer with the breadth and judgement of a lead engineer and solution architect. It owns solution-level technical integrity from initial use-case exploration through architecture, development, evaluation, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement.

The role will help Haleon move from isolated AI applications towards reusable skills, plugins, MCP-enabled integrations, governed data and semantic grounding, and repeatable engineering patterns that can support multiple functions, markets and use cases.

Key responsibilities

Work with product owners, business SMEs, data owners and risk stakeholders to translate business processes and user needs into technically viable agentic solutions , defining measurable outcomes, acceptance criteria, non-functional requirements and operational constraints.
Input into the end-to-end solution architecture for assigned agents and Copilot solutions, including secure grounding and retrieval, identity, authentication, authorisation, least-privilege access, reliability, scalability, maintainability, cost control, data residency, observability, rollback and supportability.
Personally design and write production-quality code , configurations, prompts, agent instructions, tools, APIs, connectors, MCP services and automation using Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility, Microsoft Graph and Copilot APIs, Azure integration services and Power Platform.
Create reusable components , skills, plugins, tool definitions, prompt templates, evaluation assets, connectors, deployment modules and reference implementations, integrating with governed enterprise data and semantic layers.
Define and execute testing and evaluation across unit, component, integration, regression, grounding, adversarial, performance, accessibility, security and compliance requirements, and provide evidence-based technical recommendations for go-live.
Deploy solutions through controlled development, test and production environments ; configure telemetry, traces, dashboards, alerts, auditability and production runbooks; and lead diagnosis and remediation of complex production incidents.
Conduct code, prompt, integration and design reviews for other engineers, coach colleagues, and feed production learning into reusable standards and engineering guidance.

Qualifications and skills

Essential

Agentic AI architecture, orchestration and multi-step workflow design.
Microsoft Foundry Agent Service and SDK-based development.
Microsoft Copilot Studio, Power Platform environments, solutions and ALM.
Microsoft 365 Copilot extensibility, including agents, skills, plugins, connectors, MCP and APIs.
Python and TypeScript/.NET engineering for production services and integrations.
API, event, workflow and integration architecture, including Azure API Management, Functions and Logic Apps where appropriate.
Enterprise grounding, RAG, vector search, semantic models and governed data products.
Microsoft Entra identity, OAuth, managed identities, RBAC and least privilege.
GitHub, Azure DevOps, CI/CD, infrastructure or configuration automation and release engineering.
AI evaluation, prompt and tool testing, observability, OpenTelemetry and Application Insights.
Threat modelling, secure development, privacy, Microsoft Purview and Responsible AI.
Experience designing and delivering enterprise AI, data, cloud and or automation solutions into production, with strong evidence of hands-on software engineering.

Preferred

Experience owning technical delivery across requirements, design, build, testing, go-live and live operations, including integration with enterprise data, APIs, identity and security controls.
Experience operating in a regulated, privacy-sensitive or similarly controlled environment.
Degree in computer science, software engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
Microsoft AI-103, AB-100, AB-620, AZ-305, PL-400, SC-300 or SC-401 credentials are desirable where aligned to the candidate’s specialism; equivalent production experience is acceptable.
