About the job

Teamwork makes the stream work.

Roku is changing how the world watches TV

Roku is the #1 TV streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and we've set our sights on powering every television in the world. Roku pioneered streaming to the TV. Our mission is to be the TV streaming platform that connects the entire TV ecosystem. We connect consumers to the content they love, enable content publishers to build and monetize large audiences, and provide advertisers unique capabilities to engage consumers.

From your first day at Roku, you'll make a valuable - and valued - contribution. We're a fast-growing public company where no one is a bystander. We offer you the opportunity to delight millions of TV streamers around the world while gaining meaningful experience across a variety of disciplines.

What does the team work on?

Roku pioneered streaming to the TV and continues to innovate and lead the industry. As we strive to influence the future of television globally, including TV advertising, the ongoing success depends heavily on our investment in the Content Management System. With Roku providing millions of movies, episodes, news, and channels, the Content Management System plays a vital role in managing content ingestion, selection, enrichment, and curation. We are seeking engineers capable of developing, designing, and deploying highly scalable, dependable applications, tools, and automation frameworks essential for efficiently handling the vast volume of content in our pipeline.

What is the role?

As a Senior Manager of Software Engineering on the Browse and Discovery Platform team, you will own engineering for featured experiences and lead key components of the browse platform. You will lead and grow a team of backend engineers building the services and APIs that connect content, product capabilities, and user experiences across Roku devices. This role requires strong technical leadership in distributed systems, cloud services, and backend architecture, paired with the ability to translate evolving product requirements into reliable, scalable solutions. You will define technical direction, guide architectural decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional partners to deliver new experiences from concept through launch. The successful candidate will balance product delivery with long-term platform development while developing engineers and promoting a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and accountability.

How will I use AI at Roku?

At Roku, we don’t just use AI, we work with it. AI agents and smart tools help power drafts, analysis, and repetitive workflows, while our people bring direction, judgment, and accountability. We’re looking for curious, adaptable builders who can show how they’ve used AI or automation to move faster, raise the bar, and scale their impact.

We value your AI skills if you have built fluency across the agentic engineering toolchain — coding harnesses like Claude Code or Cursor, MCP servers, custom skills, or agent frameworks. And you can describe projects where you shipped real work with these tools. You know how to drive an agent, verify its output, and ramp on an unfamiliar codebase with an agent helping you.

What are the responsibilities of the role?

Lead and manage a team of backend engineers, providing guidance, mentorship, and support to foster professional growth and development
Own the technical roadmap and delivery of featured experiences and key browse platform services, from design and implementation through launch and ongoing operation
Architect and evolve highly available, distributed services and APIs that support content discovery and engaging user experiences at scale
Build reusable capabilities for configuring, publishing, scheduling, and delivering featured experiences across Roku devices
Collaborate with product management, design, client engineering, and content teams to define requirements, manage dependencies, and deliver new capabilities
Drive improvements in service reliability, performance, observability, and operational efficiency while enabling experimentation and rapid product iteration
Define and enforce engineering best practices, coding standards, and development processes to ensure high-quality software delivery
Conduct performance evaluations, set clear objectives, and provide mentorship to foster professional growth and development across the team
Work closely with senior leadership to align engineering efforts with overall business objectives and timelines

What experience would help someone be successful in this role at Roku?

10+ years of software development experience with deep technical expertise in building high-availability, large-scale distributed systems and services
5+ years of experience in a leadership or management role, overseeing engineering teams and driving software development projects from conception to delivery
Proven track record of building and managing high-performing engineering teams
Strong proficiency in Java or a similar backend programming language, with experience designing and developing APIs and cloud-based services
Deep understanding of backend technologies, architecture patterns, and best practices, including microservices, RESTful APIs, message queues, caching, and databases
Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
Experience operating production services at scale, including performance optimization, observability, and incident response
Strong ability to make practical trade-offs and drive programs with autonomy
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience

What should I know about Roku's culture?

Roku is a great place for people who want to work in a fast-paced environment where everyone is focused on the company's success rather than their own. We try to surround ourselves with people who are great at their jobs, who are easy to work with, and who keep their egos in check. We appreciate a sense of humor. We believe a fewer number of very talented folks can do more for less cost than a larger number of less talented teams. We're independent thinkers with big ideas who act boldly, move fast and accomplish extraordinary things through collaboration and trust. In short, at Roku you'll be part of a company that's changing how the world watches TV.

We have a unique culture that we are proud of. We think of ourselves primarily as problem-solvers, which itself is a two-part idea. We come up with the solution, but the solution isn't real until it is built and delivered to the customer. That penchant for action gives us a pragmatic approach to innovation, one that has served us well since 2002.
